NSW Corporate Games Results

Thanks for representing DD at the NSW Corporate Games

Well, before the 2008 NSW Corporate Games began, we may have been considered the company equivalent of Equatorial Guinea… but our results ensured DD will never again be taken lightly!

the Double Drummer tennis team

Even with the last minute withdrawal due to illness of our star tennis player and 1st Place medal certainty, Lara Giltinan, our 31-strong team performed superbly and returned a terrific medal tally of 4 First Place, 1 Second Place and 1 Third Place.

Overall we finished 39th (out of 292 organisations) in the medal tally and 5th (out of 41 organisations) in our Division 4. Click here for all results

That's a brilliant result for our first public outing, coinciding nicely with a Sun-Herald article about our growing community (16th March, page 32).

Our congratulations and sincere thanks to everyone who participated in the DD colours… from our brave Volleyball team led by Steve and Libby that won two of its three pool matches… to our lone triathlete Fokko who overcame a sleepless night caused by his new baby to record a personal best ever time… our golfer Alan who played a great round at Bonny Doon on Friday then came out to the pool to support our swimmer on Saturday… and especially to our amazing Ambassador, Elka Graham who swam well within herself but was still far too good for the field in her two events, winning 1st Place in both the 50m and 100m freestyle for women aged under 30.

Our other Gold medallists were:

  • Rob Giltinan who absolutely blitzed the tennis field in the Open Men's Singles event, dropping just one game in six matches and winning the 1st Place medal match 6-0, 6-0 … and
  • The BLues Brothers ('BL' standing for Boston Legal), Gary Nadjarian and Dave Keogh who beat the defending title holders to take out the Tennis Over 40 Men's Doubles, also in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

Denise Darby and Myra Swanson won our 2nd Place medal in the Tennis Open Ladies Doubles, with mother/daughter pairing, Renate and Alexis Handel winning 3rd Place in the same event.

Amazingly, the DD team made up no less than half the number of competitors in the Ladies Doubles and were very unlucky not to snare the 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place trifecta. Two of our pairs missed out on the medal matches by just 1 game.

Queensland Corporate Games

Thanks again for your support and for helping raise $200,000 for diabetes research and treatment programs in NSW. If you enjoyed the experience, we're doing it all again in Brisbane in May! The Queensland Corporate Games will have a more 'Olympic' feel about it as most of the events are held at the one centre – the University of Queensland. And as DD will be 'on tour', there's bound to be some fun social activity happening at night.

There are 14 sports from which to choose in Queensland and while speed skating isn’t one of them, we’re hoping our Brisbane-based DD Ambassador, Winter Olympics legend Steven Bradbury, will make an appearance in another event. We’ll also be fielding former NBA and NBL basketball star, 6’ 6” tall American All-Star, Eric Bailey.

So now you’re a bona fide DD member, if you can take a Friday off work, join us under the DD flag once more in the sport of your choice, this time in Brisbane from May 16-18. Click here for full details

South Coast Open

Finally, seeing as we fielded such a strong tennis contingent in Sydney, a group of us will be heading to Batemans Bay in June to play in a much more social event… the South Coast Open. Everyone’s welcome for a fun long weekend when we'll be playing hard and partying harder. Click here to read an account of last year's trip

A huge thanks again everyone. Look forward to more fun in the near future.
