2009 QLD Corporate Games Results
Thanks for representing DD in the Queensland Corporate Games
Following on from our amazing effort in the NSW Corporate Games in March, Double Drummer headed to Brisbane in May for the Queensland Corporate Games. Even with a very small team of select athletes (can we blame it on the Global Economic Crisis?) we still managed to finish 37th overall on the medal tally from 121 organisations that entered the Games.
More importantly, we continued our great track record of raising money for good causes, in this case Red Kite - a charity that supports children, young people and their families dealing with cancer by providing emotional and financial support as well as educational services.
Our congratulations and sincere thanks to everyone who participated in the DD colours… in particular our Olympic Champion, Steve Bradbury, who partnered with Dave Keogh to reach the Semi-Finals of the Tennis in the Men’s Open Doubles event.
Though beaten in this match by the pair who went on to take out the tournament, the result could have been very different if Dave hadn’t pulled a calf-muscle when leading 2-1 in the Semi. The injury prevented the DD pair from playing off for the 3rd place medal. However they took consolation from a thrilling Quarter-Final win in a Tiebreaker against a young and fit combination who were the defending 2008 Champions.
Special mention also to new DD member Robyn Novakovic who flew up from Sydney to compete in the tennis… (with a surname like that she had to be a good player, right?). Robyn returned home with two medals dangling from her neck. She partnered Anna Cosio to a 3rd place result in the Open Ladies Doubles, then backed up the next day to replicate that finish in the Ladies 40+ Singles.
And thanks to Charmaine Dobson and Shaun Rigby who displayed the true DD spirit, winning one of their three pool matches in the Open Mixed Doubles, but always having a go and improving with every match… and this just a few short weeks after Charmaine had recovered from a very serious bout of pneumonia, which saw her hospitalised for a lengthy period. Well done Charm!
It was a nice change for Charmaine to be actually playing in such a big multi-sport event, rather than administrating, given her previous roles on the organising committees for events including the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, the Fosters Australian Formula One Grand Prix, the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Volvo Ocean Race Around the World, the Barcelona Olympic Games, Queens and Wimbledon (to name a few).
Games organisers were thrilled with the number of entries in these tough economic times. There were over 4,500 participants in Brisbane from 121 organisations, with the Queensland Government supplying 1,519 of those competitors – a Corporate Games World Record.
With NSW and Queensland now behind us, we look forward to the Australian Corporate Games in Melbourne this November... and prior to that, the Winter Games in Thredbo in August for all our snow sport enthusiasts.
Winter and Australian Corporate Games
The Winter Corporate Games is all about fun in the snow and you don’t even have to be a skier to participate! Sports include Alpine Skiing, Snowboarding, Snow Volleyball and Snow Tubing!
Held over the 1st weekend in August (Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd), entries close on Wednesday July 15. Families are encouraged to participate and there’ll be all the usual fun with the Games Welcome and Medal Presentations to be held at the Thredbo Alpine Hotel. Click here for full details
Then it’s on to the BIG one in Melbourne, with over 11,000 athletes from more than 350 organisations expected to compete across 20 sports over three days of exciting competition. And the cause we’re helping this time is the Epilepsy Foundation of Victoria. The Australian Corporate Games will be held this year from November 20-22 so mark those dates in your diary now.
So thanks again for your support in Queensland and for helping to raise money for a great cause. If you enjoyed the QLD Games experience, remember we’re doing it all again in Thredbo in August and Melbourne in November! With DD ‘on tour’ again, there’s bound to be plenty more great performances during the day (and unruly social activity happening every night!) Click here for more information.
Looking forward to more fun in the near future.
